Are You "Into" the Occult?
Some of the common and everyday things that people do are part of the occult...and they don't even know it! Satan uses many tools to lure unsuspecting souls into his den of demons. Do you (or your children or your friends) practice in any of the areas below?
Question: "What does the Bible say about pornography?"
Answer: By far, the most searched for terms on the Internet are related to pornography. Pornography is rampant in the world today. Perhaps more than anything else, Satan has succeeded in twisting and perverting sex. He has taken what is good and right (loving sex between a husband and wife) and replaced it with lust, pornography, adultery, rape, and homosexuality. Pornography is simply the first step on a very slippery slope of ever-increasing wickedness and immorality (Romans 6:19). Just as a drug user is led to consume greater and more powerful quantities of drugs, so pornography drags a person into hard-core sexual addictions and ungodly desires.
The three main categories of sin are: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). Pornography definitely causes us to lust after flesh, and it undeniably is a lust for our eyes. Pornography definitely does not qualify as one of the things we are to think about, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things” (Philippians 4:8). Pornography is addictive (1 Corinthians 6:12; 2 Peter 2:19), destructive (Proverbs 6:25-28; Ezekiel 20:30; Ephesians 4:19), and leads to ever-increasing wickedness (Romans 6:19). Lusting after other people in our minds (the essence of pornography) is offensive to God (Matthew 5:28). When habitual devotion to pornography characterizes a person’s being, that demonstrates the person is not saved (1 Corinthians 6:9).
If there was one thing I could change about my life prior to becoming a Christian, it would be my involvement with pornography. Thanks be to God - He can and will give the victory. Are you involved with pornography and desire freedom from it? Here are some steps to victory: (1) Confess your sin to God (1 John 1:9). (2) Pray for God to cleanse, renew, and transform your mind (Romans 12:2). (3) Ask God to fill your mind with Philippians 4:8. (4) Learn to possess your body in holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4). (5) Understand the proper meaning of sex and rely on your spouse to meet that need alone (1 Corinthians 7:1-5). (6) Realize that if you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). (7) Take practical steps to reduce your exposure to graphic images (I.e. Install pornography blockers on your computer, limit television and video usage, find another Christian who will pray for you and help keep you accountable—your spouse, if you are married).
Satan's Final Assault Plan: KNOW Your Enemy!
The two most common names used for our enemy are the names Satan and the devil. In Old Testament Hebrew, the name Satan means "an adversary." In the New Testament, the Greek word "devil" is dia and ballos. Combined, these words means "to throw through." The fiery darts of the Enemy are intended to hit against you until your wall of resistance is broken.
To most Christians, Satan's most common role is that of a tempter. The Bible teaches some powerful truths concerning the end time and temptation. The Holy Spirit told John in Revelation 3:10 that there is an "hour of temptation" coming upon the whole earth.
This hour of testing can be compared to the "season" of testing Christ encountered in the wilderness. Satan came, then "departed from him for a season" (Luke 4:13). We know all attacks come in seasons, but they also leave for a season.
Often, God will "keep you" or "guard you" from the extreme attacks of Satan. In the life of Christ, his attacks came in three forms:
1. Physical Attacks
Satan tried to kill Him in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:15-20).
Satan attempted to throw Jesus off a cliff in Nazareth (Luke 4:29).
Satan attempted to drown Him when He crossed Galilee in a ship (Juke 8:22-25).
2. Mental Attacks
Jesus was accused of curing people through Satan (Matthew 12:24).
He was accused of breaking God's Law (John 9:16).
He was accused of blasphemy against God (Luke 5:21).
3. Spiritual Attacks
Satan accused Jesus in the Wilderness of Temptation (Luke 4).
Satan tempted through the lust of the flesh when he told Jesus to turn the stones into bread.
He tempted through the lust of the eyes when he told Jesus to jump off of the Temple.
He tempted through the pride of life when he challenged Jesus: "If You will [bow down and] worship before me" the whole world will be Yours (Luke 4:7)!
Jesus' Hour Finally Came
Often when Satan, through men, attempted to attack Christ either spiritually, physically or mentally, the attack was like "water on a duck's back." It seemed to just roll off of Christ, and have little or no impact on Him. In fact, He once said, "My hour has not yet come" (John 2:4). John repeated the statement twice more (John 7:30, 8:20).
Finally, before the event in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Bible says that Jesus prayed, "Father, the hour has come" (John 17:1). When Christ's hour of suffering arrived, notice what happened in a 24-hour period:
His agony in the garden, Luke 22:44
His betrayal and arrest by 600 men, John 18:1-6
His trial before Anna and Caiaphas, John 18
His trial and beating before Pilate, John 18 and 19
His crucifixion, John 19
All of these historic and important events occurred within 24 hours of "His hour" arriving! The plan of redemption had to be acted out, and Christ knew the time had arrived! God no longer protected his Son from the mobs. Now was the hour of salvation!
When Your Hour Comes
A spiritual walk with God is similar to a marriage. The first stage of the marriage is the honeymoon. For weeks or months, everything is, "Oh darling . . . I love you" and "whatever you need, sweetheart." New converts experience a "honeymoon" with the Lord immediately after their conversion. They experience the joy and feeling of a prisoner being freed from his chains!
But after a few years of marriage, the sober facts of daily life begin to settle in. You soon learn that you have to "work" at keeping the excitement of marriage burning. The new convert soon learns that an enemy is ever present to distract and hinder the flow of God in his life.
If you serve God for any length of time, there comes a season, or an "hour," of testing or adversity in your life. You may begin to feel a desire to fall into the old sins from which you were delivered. Old passions and desires can be stirred up. Satan will pierce your thoughts, making you think that if you were truly saved, you would never be thinking such thoughts."
Many people fall then their "hour of testing" comes. They say, "Well, since I'm thinking about it, I may as well go ahead and do it. What's the difference?" There is a big difference. Jesus was tempted by His thoughts, but He never acted out the ideas Satan gave to Him. The Bible says:
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Also, Christ "was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). To be bombarded with thoughts from the outside is not a sin. These kinds of thoughts must be taken captive and cast down! They must not be acted on!
Satan's most common role, believers have found, is that of a tempter. But that is not his only role. In fact, that is not his main role! Look at what Christ is doing on a continual basis. This may surprise you.
Satan's Main Role
A few days ago, this verse leaped out at me:
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down" (Revelation 12:10).
First, notice two important words in this passage. The first is "accuser." In the Greek, this word means "one who is against one in the assembly." The assembly, of course, is referring to the believers in the church. The second reference is "our brothers." The original means a brother such as one born from your mother's womb.
God takes it serious when we call each other "brother." It is more than a phrase, it is a covenant term. We are closer than flesh brothers to one another, because we have been adopted into the same family, with the same Father, by the same blood
The main ministry of Satan against believers has been to accuse them before God. Consider the following:
Satan the Garden of Eden accusing God of withholding a blessing from Adam and Eve by forbidding them to eat of the tree of knowledge (Genesis 3:1-5).
Satan entered God's presence to accuse Job of serving God from an ulterior motive (Job 1:1-11).
Satan stands on the right side of the altar (which is reserved for God) and accuses Joshua the priest of being unfit for service in the office of the priesthood (Zechariah 3:1-3).
Satan attempted to bring an accusation against Moses at his death, and was rebuked by God through the Archangel, Michael (Jude 9).
Even on the cross, Satan again questioned the Sonship of Christ: "If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross" (Matthew 27:40).
We must remember Christ's present role in heaven is that of a high priest (Hebrews 8, 9, 10). Jesus is not in the building business. We often quote John 14 where He says, "I go to prepare a place for you," and we teach that Christ is now building mansions for us. Actually, the mansions were already built. Jesus said, "In my Father's house are many mansions." Even in Abraham's day, that patriarch "looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God" (Hebrews 11:10).
Jesus is "at the right hand of God" (Acts 7:56) where "He always lives to make intercession" (Hebrews 7:25). He is forgiving sins and instructing the recording angels to keep records and names in the heavenly books!
What Satan Is Doing Now
It is clear from Scripture that the "principalities" are controlling the atmosphere over nations (Daniel 10; Ephesians 6:12). Satan has a kingdom that is organized, with various positions of spirit rebels doing his work and his bidding.
Satan's role, according to Scripture, is that of an accuser in the heavenly courtroom. He is ever bringing lies and accusing you, trying to bring a judgment against your soul before God. He does this "day and night." He will be "cast out of heaven" because when believers are raptured; there will be no more "brethren" to accuse before God. We will be in resurrected, immortal bodies in heaven! John said, "Rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them" (Revelation 7:12)!
The end time battle will be a battle with the world, and with people in the church bringing accusations against one another and attacking one another with their words!
Did You Consider This?
What is the number one problem in every church in America?
The answer is gossip! From the pulpit to the padded pews, the saints know how to tell all tales that come to their attention! "Did you hear about . . . I heard that so-and-so . . . did you know?" All of this "did you know" stuff is simply accusations.
Satan is using people in the church to add to his list of assistants in keeping the fire of accusations alive!
I Learned a Valuable Lesson
A minister I know about fell into sin. He had the same last name as his brother who was a pastor in a major city. The local radio station declared that the pastor, not his brother, had confessed to moral failure. I had told several people that day about this shocking incident. I found out the next day that the radio station was wrong. Imagine how I felt about "informing" people about the wrong person!
A pastor told of an incident that supposedly happened to me in a church many years ago. I received a call to verify whether it was true . . . and it was a total lie. My friend returned a call to this "gossiping minister" and said, "Perry Stone wants to talk to you. He is upset you would repeat a lie."
The minister ho-hummed around rather nervously, before confessing, "Oh, I made a mistake. It wasn't Brother Stone this happened to, it was someone else." Yet, in a large meeting he had said, "I know this for a fact." He had lied, and was embarrassed that he was caught. Why did he repeat as fact something he was actually unsure about?
In fact, why do we repeat gossip at all? About 80 percent of the time, it has been repeated so much that it is not what the facts are, anyway.
Get Ready for an End Time Assault
The final battle will be with Satan who is accusing the brethren. He is constantly trying to take sins that were long forgiven and bring them up before the congregation. He is perpetually trying to create confusion among the saints and disunity in the body through gossip and slander.
Satan stays busy "day and night" with his assaults.
How to Overcome
We are told how to overcome. "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony" (Revelation 12:10). The blood covers all our past sins when we truly repent. Our testimony of faith seals our redemption and keeps Satan from having access to our spirits. We must try to keep our testimony above reproach, so Satan won't have any ammunition.
When the prosecutor comes, he meets with a lawyer. In heaven, judgment should meet us at the gate. Instead, mercy will walk in with us, saying "This child of God is with me." When we are forgiven, the accuser has nothing to stand on!
